The core business of Conors is trading in food rapeseeds of Ukrainian origin and exporting them to the countries of EU-27, Middle East and North Africa for processing.
Rape is an agricultural oil crop, cultivation of which was particularly popular in Eastern Europe in the last decade. Perfectly suitable soil and climatic conditions for agricultural production in Ukraine are characterized by sufficient rainfall and above-zero temperatures. In addition, the presence of highly profitable zoned varieties and hybrids that have high rates of stable yield, weather-resistance and high-quality of derivative commodity seeds, as well as steady demand for it in the European Union market form the major impact on the development of this branch of plant growing.
The total demand of EU processing enterprises in rapeseeds is approximately 22 million tons. EU own production amounts to about 20 million tons per year. Therefore, the market for the Ukrainian rapeseeds is formed in the long term.
|EU, thous. tons||2009/2010 MY||2010/2011 MY||2011/2012 MY|
|Production||21 551||20 706||19 100|
|Consumption||23 594||23 150||22 246|

EU is the biggest consumer of rapeseed meal in the world. The EU-27 is already using considerable amounts of rapeseed meal in animal feed, however, there is still room for further expansion. EU has a long rapeseed crushing history and an increasing demand for rapeseeds every marketing year.
Processing of rapeseed for oil production provides animal meal as a by-product, which has a high protein content. Rapeseed is also a heavy nectar producer. A more recent development is the use of oil in the manufacture of bio-diesel. Europe is the world’s largest bio-diesel producer and rapeseed is its main feedstock. Since rapeseed oil is the main feedstock for Europe’s biodiesel industry and the EU has mandated that biofuels account for 10% of transportation fuel use by 2020, Europe is likely to increasingly rely on foreign imports specifically from Russia and the Ukraine.
